Wedding Business Rescue or Bar Rescue?
I’ll be the first to admit that we are addicted to the new show Bar Rescue on Spike TV. It’s about bar consultant, John Taffer, and how he fixes broken bars. We DVR all of the episodes and watch them when we have time. And we end up saving half of the episodes for future reference. Even our kids freak out if we delete an episode before they’ve had a chance to watch it. My kiddos are 10 and 12, so yes, I’m kind of embarrassed about that fact, but they happen to have a great interest in and aptitude for business as well, so it is what it is.
Last night we were watching one of the episodes and yet again some failing bar owner is pushing back against John Taffer when he wants to change something they’re clearly doing wrong. Their bar is disgusting and desperately needs a thorough cleaning but they fail to see where this is an issue to patrons. They don’t keep chicken at the proper required temperature and fail to see how a little salmonella will hurt anyone. There was a murder at the front door last year and they fail to see how rebranding and a name change will make a difference. So much so that they openly argue with the professional that they called in to help them out!
What are your Excuses?
When asked why they’re failing they offer 100 excuses as to why but rarely do any of them have to do with the owner themselves. It’s either the economy or the location or the quality of customers. But never them. Yet John can usually point out a handful of reasons they’re failing before he even talks with the owner! They’re so obvious to John and everyone else, but completely hidden to the owner.
A lot of wedding business owners are in the same boat as these struggling bar owners. Business was once easy for them. But that was a few years ago (or even last year). Now the economy is bad, brides are getting younger and no longer connect with someone your age, there are dozens of new planners (or DJ’s or florists or caterers) popping up every month, people all around you are charging less than you. And a hundred different reasons why you’re failing, right? All of these reasons are wrong! And just like John Taffer, I can see all of your issues! And most of the time I can see them before I even meet you as well. I can see the mistakes in your website, the mistakes in your advertising, in your email response. And they’re all but hidden from you!
Do Mastermind Groups work?
I count myself among the lucky business owners that was fortunate enough to learn about business consultants and mastermind groups early on in my business. My husband and I were just one month into our wedding planning business when we found a wedding planner consultant online and immediately attended her seminar. That seminar changed our entire way of looking at our company and is one of the reasons we have been so successful. It set me on the path that I’m on now, where I can now help so many other wedding and event professionals.
At the end of Bar Rescue they always give an update on how the bar is now doing 30 or 60 days later. Most of the bars see an increase of liquor sales from 15% – 50% and food sales typically increase as well. Life is better for the bar owner and employees and they are back on track in business and in life. Except for those that didn’t follow John’s advice – They typically fail.
