I guess if we are going to call ourselves the SEO Authority, we should probably clarify what that means. The dictionary says that authority is:
1.) the power to influence others, especially because of one’s commanding manner or one’s recognized knowledge about something.
2.) the confidence resulting from personal expertise.
3.) a person with extensive or specialized knowledge about a subject; an expert
Why Are We Authorities?
Do we have the power to influence others? Yes, after all this time doing what we do, we think we do have the power to influence – and help – others. And I think that even the second part of that sentence qualifies – we have a recognized knowledge about something, namely SEO.
Do we have confidence, resulting from personal expertise? I would say, yes we do. We are confident in our ability and personal expertise because everything that we do for people in the wedding industry, and everything we teach you to do, is based on actual real-life experience. We know the strategies that we give you are going to work! Not just in theory, but in real actual working life for your business.
Are we persons with extensive or specialized knowledge about a subject? Absolutely! We don’t just know SEO, we know SEO for your wedding business. It’s not just a bunch of theories about how SEO works. We’re not teaching it because we read it in a book somewhere. We know SEO because we live it, we breathe it. We have used the same tactics and strategies in our own wedding business (we have an event planning company in Austin) for years.
I guess we figure that if you’re going to call yourself the SEO Authority, you better really be the authority! You better know what you’re talking about, when it comes to SEO, and you better be able to replicate those results again and again and again. And you better know what you’re talking about when it comes to running a wedding business! Because there’s a big difference in doing SEO for your local auto mechanic than there is for your local wedding dress shop. Keep in mind that when you hire an “SEO Guy” for your business, they need to actually understand your business.
Hiring An SEO Guy Outside The Wedding Industry – A True Story
Let me give you an example – we have a client that is a florist, a really, really fantastic florist! She’s been a florist for ages and knows just about everything there is to know about floral in the wedding industry. Her designs are outstanding! She used to be “the big fish” in town. But not anymore. Sadly, over the last several years her business has been in decline. She’s finding that she gets more and more budget shoppers and she’s just not attracting the very high-end clients that she used to be known for.
About two years ago she hired a local website firm to take over her website and SEO efforts. This firm deals with an array of small business types – plumbers, roofers, yoga studios, accountants, freelancers of varying types, and things of that nature. They have a pretty generic template that they use to increase each website’s SEO. And they do a pretty good job across the board. (I know the guy that owns the company. He’s a brilliant analyst of numbers and stats.) But there’s a huge difference between a website that speaks to people needing a plumber than a website that speaks to people needing a wedding florist. They are simply two different animals. And even though my friend that owns the website company feels like both are the same thing and all you have to do is apply the same principles, he’s just wrong.
So, back to our florist. Over the past couple of years that she’s been working with him her SEO have actually improved a ton. In her phone rings like crazy! On the flip side of that, her larger sales have reduced by a ton, and she spends a huge chunk of her day fielding calls from price shoppers and budget wedding couples. Each month when her web guy came to visit her, super excited by her numbers from that month, she just got more and more frustrated. How can these great numbers to her website be translating into such horrible sales numbers in her business overall?
Web guy doesn’t understand that her business isn’t about selling a $65 FTD basket of flowers to mom. Her business is about selling $60,000 in custom florals for mom’s daughter’s wedding. And as such, every word on her website should have been directed towards the $60,000 in flowers for the wedding, and every picture on her website should have been of other gorgeous weddings where their past clients have spent $60,000 in flowers for their wedding. But instead, almost every picture on the website looks like it came from 1990 something and is clearly directed toward selling the $65 basket of flowers to mom.
Web guy has no idea how to talk to brides and grooms! And while he may be the best analyst of numbers and statistics about websites and SEO, he is the absolute worst choice to run the website and SEO of that florist’s business! Yes, our florist needed the help with her website. No one’s arguing that point. But she didn’t just need SEO help, she needed SEO help from someone that understands SEO AND understands the wedding industry and how brides and grooms think. She needed both to be successful in attracting to right kind of client to her business.
